Our first compilation for 2008 presents a facet of ambient music that is often overlooked in favor of the more electronic or synthesized soundscapes. Here we have an eclectic collection of works featuring a broad variety string instruments, usually but not always treated to effects. In the artist credits below we’ve provided information about the instruments used, and you can see they range from the familiar to the exotic.

This compilation is divided into two parts, each with accompanying sleeve art so it can be burned to disks if you wish.

Kittenhead is the latest long-form (CD-length) production by Djinnestan, departing significantly from the Rain series and Purr. In many ways, it defies easy categorization. It is very ambient, but contains rhythms. It is dark, yet at the same time whimsical. It includes acoustic instruments and vocals, but they have been processed virtually beyond recognition. Nonetheless it is a subtle and pleasant listen. This release features vocal contributions by Aria Nadii.

Djinnestan is an ambient recording project of C.P. McDill and Aria Nadii. The audio style of Djinnestan is a blend of heavily processed acoustic recordings and often obscure samples. It is a sound art “group” that formed in 2003 as a spin-off of C.P. McDill’s Saluki Regicide, with a particular focus on tranquil and ethereal ambient textures. As of this release, the discography of Djinnestan amounts to eight releases, five of which are long-form (CD-length) ambient albums intended for play at low volumes, especially as one goes to sleep.

About the album:
Djinnestan are
C.P. McDill – Instruments, samples, sounds
Aria Nadii – Voice, sounds, instruments
Includes a brief sample from a talk given by U.G. Krishnamurti

A third Rain-themed longform ambient composition by Djinnestan. Perhaps still in a forest, but now at the banks of a stream, with wisps of fog, chirping crickets, the moon, and other mysterious nocturnal elements. This CD-length work creates a nice acoustic mood for meditation or sleep. It is recommended that you play it at low volume, as it is meant to be listened to peripherally, not directly.

Rain is a series of conceptual tracks produced for Webbed Hand Records. Each “Rain” is a CD-length ambient recording ideal for quiet listening while meditating, writing, or going to sleep. Typically the recordings in this series are minimalistic soundscapes, with motifs played out cyclically rather than progressively, in order to induce relaxed states.

Webbed Hand Records’ first release of 2006 is an anthology of recordings by the label’s founder, C.P. McDill. This selection represents the spectrum of his sound art projects from 1993 to 2005, excluding the long-form (CD-length) ambient recordings.

C.P. McDill’s began experimenting with recorded sound in the mid-1980s, but the tapes from that period have unfortunately (or fortunately) been lost.

The earliest track, “Covert Ecology” originates from an untitled session of 4-track tape experiments in 1993. When the tapes were rediscovered in 2005, they were transferred to digital, remixed and became the EP Covert Ecology.

After a long hiatus from sound experiments, McDill resumed recording in 2002 under the project name Rolling Calf Sinfonette. “Macedoine” stands out most strongly from this period, with its industrial bellydance rhythm and bombastic intensity. RCS was meant to be finite, mostly as a way of learning digital multitracking and mixing, and was retired after 9 very prolific months.

Saluki Regicide arose in 2003 with a very different sound from RCS, and itself spawned the projects Tree Helicopter and Djinnestan. Tree Helicopter has since been retired, but Saluki Regicide and Djinnestan are still considered active projects.

Rowboat Magicians lasted long enough for 4 recordings to be produced, and has been shelved indefinitely. It may return in another form at some later date. Akashic Crow’s Nest is an ongoing exploration of sounds synthesized from digital images.

All tracks recorded and produced by CP McDill

From the first few months of Webbed Hand’s existence as a netlabel, Darkdrone Radio (a popular netradio stream on Live365.com, now defunct) recognized its potential as a source of excellent sounds. Darkdrone has regularly featured works by Webbed Hand artists in its rotation, right in there alongside more prominent artists such as Rapoon, Vidna Obmana, and Brian Eno.

To show our appreciation for this abundance of promotion and exposure, we’ve collaborated with Darkdrone to assemble this mix of new work and special edits of work already released.

Haunted textures of sound are served forth in classic Djinnestan style in this unexpected EP release. Do ghosts relive their dying moments? Do they have unfinished business, or messages for the living? Without explaining the concept of this album, I shall leave you to infer what you can from the track titles and a close listening to these haunted soundscapes.

It’s Just the Wind

Djinnestan’s art consists of heavily processed acoustic, electronic, and sampled sounds, woven into rich sonic textures. Typically these tracks are lucky accidents spawned from my efforts to create textures and pads for my other recording projects (Saluki Regicide, Akashic Crow’s Nest, etc). But with such sonic richness, they need to be appreciated in their own right.

The Webbed Hand “Rain” series in now graced by a contribution from Djinnestan. Much like the shorter works, this 74-minute piece is subtle and enchanted. As if in a dream you find yourself strolling in a fairytale forest, dark and misty, peopled by the figments of childhood imaginings. This album is ideal for meditation, trancework, and quiet activities. It is recommended that you play it at low volume, as it is meant to be listened to peripherally, not directly.

Purr is a 76 minute ambient track intended to be played at low volume as background ambience, preferably as you go to sleep. It generates a warm and cozy feeling, like having a cat purring next to your head.

Visit the download page to stream or download this album.

With a high fidelity stereo system possessing good bass response, some of the infrasonic qualities will come through, thus adding to the trancey and hypnotic effect of the work. It is my feeling, based on some study of infrasound, that what one hears as a cat’s purr is only part of the spectrum of sound actually being generated, much of it below the threshold of conscious hearing, in the infrasonic range.

The recording does not vary significantly throughout its duration, except for subtle rising and diminishing of volume at various points. All of the recording is synthesized. It is not a recording of an actual cat.

I hope you enjoy it. I made it as a gift for someone, without the intention of releasing it, but it has come to be a favorite, so I have permission to share it…

This album was created for, and is dedicated to Aria Nadii, who listens to it every night, and with whose blessing I am making it available to you.

Let Purr become your favorite bedtime album.
