About the album:
Mystified and Saluki Regicide began a series of collaborations in 2004 which continue to this day. Razor Pilgrimage was the second such work, close on the heels of Ancestral Technologies.

Mystified recently revisited Razor Pilgrimage and decided to challenge C.P. McDill (Saluki Regicide) to give the work a makeover, remixing it in any way he saw fit to. The resulting approach was to examine the earlier compositional techniques of the Rain series, and approach it as an album composed in that spirit. While this album has more rhythmic energy that the typical Rain, the title nonetheless alludes to that venerable staple of the Webbed Hand catalog.

“Dance Like Branches” was a response to an artistic challenge by C.P. McDill for mystified to compose in an older style, and without using certain tools. All sounds were created by hand in the studio from instruments played by Thomas, with the exception of the vocal samples.

Musicians who like the sounds are welcome to remix them or to use them in their own mixes, with attribution. The remix kit:

Bone Drones has now become an open-ended quest to find the sonic possibilities of the trombone as a drone instrument.

“For Bone Drones 5, Mystified brought in some new elements. One was Paulstretch– some of the pBone sounds were stretched before they were further effected, giving them more of a string-like quality. Another was bits and pieces of an ancient opera recording, highly warped and effected. You can hear them if you listen closely. Mystified has expanded the original Bone Drones trilogy into new territory thanks to the acquisition of a new instrument.

A recently invented trombone called the Jiggs pBone has revolutionized the world of “brass” instruments. Although it is constructed of plastic, it is capable of the rich tones and volume of its traditional metallic cousin. It is in its lighter weight and less brassy overtones that new possibilities occur, and thus inspired, Thomas Park of Mystified has undertaken to begin a new set of Bone Drones recordings. The sound colorations resulting seem almost to resonate more like a string chamber group than one of brass.

“Revenge Of Plunderman” completes the trilogy which started with “Adventures Of Plunderman” and continued with “Return of Plunderman.”

Plunderman continues his quest for the perfectly eccentric loop with some ancient Moog melodies ripped from vinyl. Being somewhat twisted, he has transformed these vinyl loops into world-beat songs. “Revenge Of Plunderman” feels both retro and futuristic, hearkening to antique sounds and looking forward to an era of global unity.

Following on the success of Mystified’s “Bone Drones” series comes a new collection of drone works, this time drawing its sounds entirely from a wooden overtone flute.

“In August of 2011, Thomas of mystified purchased an overtone flute from artist Steve Brand. The flute, when played, hits a single note on various octaves. It produces a nice, breathy tone. Thomas immediately became interested in using sounds from the flute to create acoustic drones. Each of the 5 pieces in Overtone Drones was made using only sounds from the overtone flute. Tracks one through four each used a single note blown on the flute. Track five contains sounds from one through four run through further effects and processes. Thomas hopes you will enjoy these drones, although no synthesizers were used in their creation.”

“Bone Drones 3″, the concluding part of the Bone Drone trilogy, is darker than the first part and less abrasive than the second. All 4 pieces were created from 3 notes played on a muted trombone, then processed and mixed. I tried to focus a little more on progressions and chord structures on this release. There’s lots of bass in these, so headphones or good speakers are the best option.”

“Bone Drones 2: Prehistory” is an essay in brass on the times when giants walked the earth. The main source for this release was a single, very high-pitched tone played on Mystified’s trombone. This sound was recorded and processed into different sounds, with varying qualities. The resulting sounds were layered and mastered. Mystified dedicates these drones to the ancient reptiles that fed on plants and one another during the many eras before man or even mammals. Take a trip back to prehistory! — Thomas Park

“Ghostbone was recorded in late Winter of 2011 by French guitarist The Ghost Between The Strings and American trombonist Mystified. No synths were used. Only acoustic sources are in this release. Some sounds were processed before mixed, and a random function in the processing tool was heavily used, to add chance to the palette of tools on board. Mystified would like to add that these are some of his most nefarious soundscapes. Whether it was the influence of TGBTS or an especially brutal Winter it is hard to say, but this music tests the extremes of darkness. Listen and find yourself stranded in a midnight Old World forest. . .”–Thomas Park, mystified

“For each of these 5 pieces I played a long note on the trombone, trying hard to get a good tone, and holding the note as long as I could. I then processed the notes. The software I used had a “randomize” feature, and I used that a lot for the processing. Each song you hear is a single note on a real trombone processed randomly, then re-composed in an editing program.” — Thomas Park
