More work from a recording project described as “haunted head music to disturb your inner child.” Saluki Regicide was the first major project of C.P. McDill and he still considers it his primary one. It was originally most active 2003-04, then sporadically thereafter, usually in the form of collaborations and long-form works. This album signals a return to the original style of working as Saluki Regicide, and even hints at future directions.

This is the third collaboration between Mystified and Saluki Regicide. This time the concept is unique: one is assigned all frequencies below 1kHz, and the other gets everything above. The upper and lower halves were not united until the final mix, and then only adjusted for compatible levels and fades.

This is the first long-form recording by Saluki Regicide outside of the “Rain” project. Using as a foundation a long-form composition by Akashic Crow’s Nest, Saluki Regicide adds layers of characteristic embellishments: obscure samples, bizarre rhythmic loops, peculiar washes of sound, snippets of string melody, all adding up to an interesting meeting of styles.

Saluki Regicide is a recording project of C.P. McDill. Webbed Hand Records’ inaugural release was the Saluki Regicide album “Dematerialized” which along with five other releases are concentrated in the first dozen listings in our catalog. After a long dormancy, Saluki Regicide returns with “See Things,” and the coming seasons look favorable for more creative output by this popular artist.

C.P. McDill’s began experimenting with recorded sound in the mid-1980s, but the tapes from that period have unfortunately (or fortunately) been lost.

The earliest track, “Covert Ecology” originates from an untitled session of 4-track tape experiments in 1993. When the tapes were rediscovered in 2005, they were transferred to digital, remixed and became the EP Covert Ecology.

After a long hiatus from sound experiments, McDill resumed recording in 2002 under the project name Rolling Calf Sinfonette. “Macedoine” stands out most strongly from this period, with its industrial bellydance rhythm and bombastic intensity. RCS was meant to be finite, mostly as a way of learning digital multitracking and mixing, and was retired after 9 very prolific months.

Saluki Regicide arose in 2003 with a very different sound from RCS, and itself spawned the projects Tree Helicopter and Djinnestan. Tree Helicopter has since been retired, but Saluki Regicide and Djinnestan are still considered active projects.

Rowboat Magicians lasted long enough for 4 recordings to be produced, and has been shelved indefinitely. It may return in another form at some later date. Akashic Crow’s Nest is an ongoing exploration of sounds synthesized from digital images.

This one differs from “Ancestral Technologies” (wh017) in a couple of ways. The theme explores the experience of a pilgrimage in some unnamed Eastern land. A solitary (western?) traveller mingles with the hustle and bustle of the pilgrimage route, but is ultimately alone and destined to come face-to-face with none other than himself.

In this project, Saluki Regicide contributed loops and samples to Mystified, who mixed them with his own and composed the tracks. The concept of the project comes from Mystified, and Saluki Regicide provided the cover art.

Thomas Park, of Mystified, brings into his work equal doses of illbient, minimal, industrial, ambient, experimental, and a handful of other esoteric styles, and to good effect. C.P. McDill of Saluki Regicide seeks to bend time and space, or at least soundwaves, to do his bidding.

It’s a concept album, of sorts, with the tracks being inspired by past inventions, from the mighty (“Ziggurat”) to the mind-bending (“LSD”), from the practical (“Electric Stoplight”) to the pointless (“Spider’s Ladder”). And in the execution of these compositions, the artists sought to convey impressions rather than illustrations of the technologies. Thus, the work is less about the inventions themselves than about the mind’s experience of the inventions. The results are often dreamy, almost shamanistic.
